Female empowerment. Self-care. Body positivity. Florence Given has it all in her book ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty.’
Given has created a female bible. ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ is a book that I wish I had read when I was going into my teens. It’s a guide on how we can be the best version of ourselves, for self-love and for those around us.
The book will not only encourage us to evolve and grow positively but also show us how we can change society and create a better world. The book is a pep talk and Florence does a fantastic job in persuading us, or even forcing us, to change our ways through discussing topics such as feminism, learning to love who we are and internal misogyny, with plenty more topics mentioned throughout the 21 chapters.
The impact that Given has made through her debut is done through her writing, which is persuasive on its own, and eye-catching illustrations throughout the book. The illustrations show that it’s a book made for women by women and the quirky designs and quotes throughout enhance the writer's talent and passion for the topics.
Florence manages beautifully to make us question our actions.
Personally, throughout this book, I asked myself ‘do I make those comments?’, ‘do I say these things about myself?’ ‘am I biased?’ The readers questioning their actions is exactly what Florence aimed to achieve – to write a book that encourages a change.
The ending of the book ties everything together. It magically sums up that everyone is beautiful, no matter who you are. The final chapter is for you if you need to heal or learn to love yourself.
Given has recently just launched her podcast called ‘Exactly’, showing that her influence is never-ending. Once you finish ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’, you can head straight to the podcast for more feminist talk and empowerment.
The book covers such a large range of topics that make it more than a ‘self-help’ book, as well as enlightening the topic of feminism. Florence's work is honest, persuasive and artistic, successfully providing an insight into how we can be more mindful in the future. If you have the drive to be a feminist or want to better yourself or the world around you, then ‘Women Don’t Owe You Pretty’ is the perfect place to start.

Have a listen to a 'hush talk' episode where we talk about the impact that reading can have on our mindfulness. During this episode, we were joined by Niamh McCabe of 'Entitled' where she talked to us about her thoughts on 'Women Don't Owe You Pretty.'
